Digital Day

Digital Day

In the computing department this week we ran our annual BIMA Digital Day event. This day saw digital professionals from CyberDuck head back to school for a day to inspire students and offer practical advice on how to get into the digital industries.

In the morning the digital professionals introduced their world of work to the students, sharing their own career experiences whilst providing insight into the breadth of careers available in the digital industry.

In the afternoon students participated in a nationwide competition. Working in teams, they were challenged by BIMA to create digital solutions for Vue cinemas to help encourage younger people to enjoy a cinema experience. The final solutions are submitted back to BIMA for their judging panel to decide which groups will be crowned the Digital Day Champions 2023.

We had some amazing ideas from ‘Mini Vue’ to ‘ VUE 4DX cinema experience’. It was an incredibly close competition between all groups and a tie-breaker between the CyberDuck judges meant the winning entry was ‘Vue Concept’ - congratulations to the winning team Eddie, Beck, Sam and Agnes. Thank you to all students who took part for being great ambassadors of the school.

Charlie is one of the students who took part in Digital Day, here’s what he said about the experience:

Firstly, I would like to thank CyberDuck and the computer science department for organising such an educational day. I am proud to have been one of the students selected for the digital day, and I had a great time working with my peers, coming up with innovative ideas and solving problems.

The visitors from CyberDuck were open to questions and gave us an insight into the benefits of working in digital, and the fact that you don't have to be a programmer to be successful in the industry!

I enjoyed practising my skills of editing and creating designs in Canva, but also the openness of our task and the countless ideas that were waiting to be shared.

This year's challenge was to think of a unique idea that encouraged young people to choose the cinema over other forms of entertainment. Many excellent ideas were put forward, but the winning idea was 'Mini Vue' - a small cinema room that could be booked by a group of up to 8 people, with sofas, beanbags and pillows for home-style comfort. I had a great day and I would recommend the workshop to any Year 9 students who enjoy being creative and thinking out-of-the-box.
