Dining Room

About the dining room

The Sir John Lawes’ dining room is open daily before school and at break time and lunchtime.  We aim to provide a happy healthy environment where the children can meet with their friends whilst enjoying a delicious and nutritionally balanced meal.  We also have “The Pod” which serves a wide selection of wraps, slices, panini and sandwiches for those not wishing to avail of a full meal.

The school has ‘Healthy School’ status and we actively promote and encourage healthy eating both in and outside of school.

Groups of students are involved in testing the new healthy meal and snack options before we commit to adding them to the menu so that any new items already have the student seal of approval.

Opening times

Breakfast: 8.00 - 8.40am
Break: 10.30 - 10.50am
Lunch: 12.30 - 1.30pm

Sixth Form students can come to the canteen and purchase items anytime throughout the school day.

Cost

The main meal of the day is £2.50, which includes a dessert/or fruit and is nutritionally balanced.  There are also a wide range of reasonably priced healthy choices including salads, jacket potatoes, panini, sandwiches, wraps with salad, noodle and pasta dishes and fresh fruit.  Bottled water and chilled tap water (via dispenser) are available along with a small selection of soft drinks which are all school compliant.

Details of eligibility and the application process for free school meals are obtainable from the school office. Or via application can be made online

Hertfordshire County Council free school meals

Payment

The dining room operates using biometric technology.  There are readers at each till which allow students to check the balances on their account.  (Cash loaders are used to credit accounts before reaching the tills.)

This system takes the measurements of one finger and converts these measurements into a template (a string of numbers), which is then encrypted.  The template is used to permit students and staff access to the school’s catering (and library) services by placing their finger on a scanner at the point of sale or service.

To comply with the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, parental consent is always sought for each student before implementation and processing.

Sir John Lawes School remains fully compliant with the Data Protection Act and with the guidance given by the Information Commissioner’s Office regarding the use of biometric data.
