Curriculum Overview

Overview of the curriculum

Our intention is to offer a broad and balanced curriculum which is stimulating and challenging, meets the needs of the full ability range of our students and prepares them to be successful in a changing world.

KS3+

At KS3+ our intention is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum designed to embed and develop students’ prior knowledge, understanding and skills. Students are engaged and challenged through an imaginative curriculum which enables all students to thrive at the next level of their education.

KS4

At KS4 our intention is to offer a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum that allows flexibility of student choice, provides for the academic needs of all students, and sets individuals up for success post -16.

KS5

Our KS5 curriculum builds on achievement at KS4 by allowing maximum flexibility of student choice, providing a broad and balanced range of courses including academic, vocational and enrichment options. It prepares students for success beyond school by developing resilience and independence and an informed understanding of their future opportunities.

Guided options and curriculum pathways

For a complete list of subjects on offer visit our Options Process section to download the latest Options booklet. Information about the Key Stage 5 curriculum  and the wide range of courses on offer can be found on the Sixth Form pages.

Should you wish for more information on the curriculum please email admin@sjl.herts.sch.uk

Subjects

Personalised Learning

From year 7 onwards students are able to make curriculum choices that enable them to tailor-make their education.

We believe that students should have the opportunity to move onto the next stage of their education when they are ready and not have to wait for predetermined ages. For this reason some students are able to fast track in appropriate subjects, whilst others may require booster lessons in particular curriculum areas or extra literacy support to ensure they maximise their potential.

For some students an applied or vocational pathway is more appropriate in Key Stage 4 or Key Stage 5 and a suite of qualifications are available either at Sir John Lawes or in collaboration with our partners. The options are numerous and range from a Level 1 construction course at Oaklands College to a Level 3 engineering diploma.
